These webpages come from a two day conference held in Adur and Worthing in March 2009, to explore the place of community. Community is on everybody’s lips and in everybody’s policies. It is central to current government thinking. However, its nature and definition is often misunderstood and its importance is undervalued. It is vital for all of those involved in community affairs to have some common understandings and agreements– Local Authorities, other public agencies like Local Strategic Partnerships, Parish Councils, Youth Workers, Primary Care Trusts, Police, Education, voluntary sector organisations and community groups.

Click on the categories to the right to read notes from the conference. Please feel free to add your comments at any point on this website where there is the chance.

Aims and Objectives of the conference were:

  • To explore and share learning on the concepts of community development, empowerment, engagement and involvement.
  • To explore the place and shape of communities and link to the use of National Indicators especially NI41.
  • To provide the foundation for future dialogue, action planning and working together across the area.
  • To identify the similarities and differences in the various urban and rural communities across the area.
  • To begin to construct a picture of activity, need and aspirations in the communities of Adur and Worthing
